Electric Shock: Q1 2024 Auto Sales Unveil Surprising Trends and Turbulence.
The automotive industry is navigating choppy waters as Q1 2024 sales figures unveil a tale of contrasts and challenges. In a landscape characterized by constant evolution, the numbers from the year’s first three months reveal intriguing shifts that could reshape the market.
New vehicle sales in the United States witnessed a notable uptick of nearly 5% from January to March, amounting to a staggering 3.8 million vehicles sold. However, beneath this surface-level success lies a narrative of uncertainty, particularly in the electric vehicle (EV) sector.
Once hailed as the future of automotive innovation, electric vehicles are encountering a significant slowdown. Q1 2024 saw EV sales growth dwindle to a mere 2.7%, a stark departure from the impressive 47% surge witnessed the previous year. The electric spark that once ignited consumer interest is flickering.
However, the challenges extend beyond just electric cars. The influx of vehicles onto dealer lots has led to a drop in prices, with March witnessing the average sales price plummeting to $44,186, marking a notable 3.6% decline from the previous year. This price decline has ushered in a resurgence of deals, discounts, and lease offers, enticing consumers despite prevailing interest rates hovering around 7%.
Amidst the gloom surrounding electric vehicles, hybrid vehicles emerge as a beacon of hope. Ford experienced a remarkable 42% surge in hybrid vehicle sales, reaching 38,421 units sold, marking its best first-quarter performance ever in the hybrid segment.
Yet, the contrasting fortunes of automakers paint a complex picture. While Ford and Toyota celebrate sales increases, General Motors, Stellantis, and Kia face declines. Notably, even industry giant Tesla grapples with its challenges, reporting a significant 9% drop in global sales.
Amidst this backdrop, specific models stand out amidst the turbulence. Ford's Maverick and Chevrolet's Trax SUVs defy the odds, posting remarkable sales gains despite the prevailing headwinds.
Looking ahead, the industry faces a period of uncertainty. The market’s trajectory remains uncertain with the imminent arrival of more electric vehicles, such as The Wagoneer S, the Buick Electra, the Cadillac Optic, and Canoo Pickup trucks. The road ahead may be fraught with challenges, but it is also ripe with opportunities for innovation and adaptation.
As the automotive industry braces itself for the next nine months, one thing is clear: change is inevitable, and adaptability will be vital to navigating the unpredictable terrain ahead.

I mean who doesn’t love a fresh set of tires melting on earthly surfaces
Beautiful
You forgot the EPA. Seperating cars from light trucks and giving each different emissions standards based on vehicle footprint just incentivises automakers to go bigger in order to meet easier targets. Small trucks went midsize and full sizes keep getting bigger. Large sedans and wagons went away because big cars have more difficult passing then big trucks. Crew cabs just simply replaced large 4door cars. North americans love big RWD vehicles

I used to be a LR parts manager and remember one of my customers commenting that most people drive their best car to the country club. But he drove his beat 110 and would be treated as a gentleman farmer 😅
I just bought a 2002 Land Rover with Test Miles DEN logo'd seats. It's very custom inside.. Trying to research this vehicle.
EV sales going back? Is that really a suprise? Meybe people realized what they are..
I wonder why he ends with the Canoo pickup. I don't think that's even in production. Seems odd to highlight something that might not ever exist. Kind of diminishes his credibility.
Once you've experienced the convenience and remarkably low running costs of an EV, it's hard to revert to traditional vehicles. The EV has emerged from Pandora's box, and there's no turning back. That said, why not just let people drive what they want. Governments do not need to ban ICEs , just let the free market do its job.
In Europe they are pushing so hard the EVs that make people get angry. Personally I don't have the infrastructure for an EV and if you charge them on fast charges it will cost more than an ICE. Imo a plug in is quite good if you need your car for longer trips and you don't want to spend hours waiting to charge it. People should have the freedom to choose what suits them better.
@@andreiapostu which EV do you drive ?
@robgillam340 I don't have an EV and I don't want one. But they told us that after 2035 we cannot buy other cars except EV's.
@@andreiapostu It's understandable to have reservations about trying something new, but sometimes it's worth giving it a chance before making a judgment. Electric vehicles offer a unique driving experience and many benefits that might surprise you. If you ever change your mind, I'd be happy to share more about my own experiences with EVs. You might find that they're more enjoyable than you think!
Yet you still pay the government money because u dont buy fuel also they catch fire and in some cases explode unexpectedly dont get suckered in
In a word no, after 8 years ownership of an EV, having done only 40k miles ( i have other vehicles ). The battery has lost 33% capacity and range. As well as the many other logistical flaws with infrastructure, charging anxiety and slow journey times etc. etc. etc. My opinion of EV's is that they are just not fit for purpose and I will never buy another one.
EVs have always been a novelty item for upper middle class snobs that worship at the altar of climate hysteria. The hype is wearing off for regular folks.
Title says RLX has P-AWS, but the more premium RLX has SH-AWD instead.
Fwd has paws, Awd has shawd
Did he say V8 performance? Uh, no it's a V6.
Toyota are taking the more sensible approach towards a greener driving future. I for one totally agree with this approach.
the blue hairs don't care how many African children have to die to dig these minerals out of the earth with their bare hards. and the environmental destruction in the Congo and elsewhere in the third world? who cares they don't live there. the piles of bodies can reach sky high as long as they don't have to smell the stench and they can keep virtue signalling and pretending they're saving the earth because they drive a Tesla...🤮
Evs are great cars and will suit many people to be their perfect car. However they should not be forced upon everyone. They should just naturally be introduced and slowly as the technology matures they will if good enough take over completely. Once they give you 400 miles range at a reasonable £ 25k I will probably buy one.
All of these are western problems, not EV problems. Because China has already demonstrated none of the issues mentioned here are true!
ridding on Horses are "future" just like this shit EVs
EVs are "future" same as Horse carriage driving/ridding
I like it.
Lol. All of a sydden Totota started referring to their hybrids, as 'self charging', and trying to pitch their 20 year old tech against full BEV.
Toyota startegy is simply and quite obviously totally off... to the point that Toyota might nor survive it!
Totally disagree with you. Toyota are taking a more sensible approach towards a greener drive future. All electric vehicles using Large Traction batteries with Lithium-ion chemistry is not the answer. These batteries are unstable and must be kept with an operating window. They rely heavily on liquid cooling systems to carry out this job function not such high tech at all and this is one of the reasons for battery failure. Believe me Toyota are taking the correct approach at this time.
@@alanhowemusic2457you are right, Toyota saw the EV crash before it actually happened. Toyota was correct.
"EVs don't come cheap!" Well, that argument is still mostly true in North America and Europe... but EVs are already cheaper than ICE cars in China, and will be also elsewhere within a couple of years!
Charging infrastructure can indeed be a hurdle! Unless you own a Tesla! So, why could Tesla, a young company, set up the world's best charging network by a country mile, while Toyota does... nothing?
and in winter time you can wipe your butt with tesla chargers too
@@Mr11ESSE111 they ALSO work very well in winter time!
i see in Chicago, 1 work 25 not@@st-ex8506
Second point: the supply of key minerals won't keep up. Well, that has been fully debunked! To be perfectly honest, there might be, in the late 20's, a supply shortage due to the time it takes to ramp up, mainly mining, but it will be nothing more than a 1 or 2 year delay! There is enough of ANY sensitive element, to transition the whole world's energy consumption to electric several times over!
Toyota is NOT taking a different route! It is taking the route heading straight to the cliff!
that is why they are selling so many cars, particularly hybrids and EV manufacturers have unsold cars, share prices falling and cutting EV production because of ' buyer reluctance ' ?
@@stevezodiac491 Toyota hasn’t started hurting, but is simply unprepared for the future.
Not in my future.
Ev is the future....you can't stop it with your fear and propaganda.
its shit ,its only toys for rich asses and some fools which would cry when their shit EV would be worthless as used 7-10 year old
no it is not, gas car maybe destined to be replaced one day but it’s most definitely not gonna be EVs. And just in case u don’t know, EVs could be a lot more polluting than a normal gas car if don’t handle well, which in most cases, don’t.
What is better ICE propaganda (expression of common sense) or mandated (forced) transition to BEV?
@@Seibanori Not true - even if using "dirty electricity" EV are considerably more clean (2 ton of CO2 a year) than even the cleanest ICE vehicle (5 tons of CO2 a year).
@@simhz2221 have u ever considered how we gonna deal with the battery after it’s done? Here’s the thing, unless we r able to figure out a way to recycle it, the only thing we can do is to bury it, but such action will be a huge pollution to the surrounding land that it won’t be able to use as any agriculture for hundreds of years. And even if we manage to recycle the batteries, it won’t be cheap, which means that it will be very costly when u change ur battery. In a free market society, it won’t stand a chance against a petrol car or whatever’s gonna replace it in the future. Plus, the metal that makes batteries which is Lithium is actually a very limited resource. This amount of massive production will most definitely means that in the near future, batteries will be more and more expensive, that might also affect the batteries we daily used. Also, last but not least, batteries are highly unstable in case u don’t know, and this is just something that we can’t do much about it. Especially when it comes to extreme weather such as extreme heat or cold, or strong impacts like damaging or firearms, there r many cases where electric vehicles exploded in an extremely hot day.
Another lame arrogant move by the Europeans destroying Chrysler division.
I don't want a screen, I liked nobs and switches. They last longer and you can use them easier without paying attention.
